Welcome to Olicana Mosaics, the website of the Olicana Design Workshop.
Olicana was the name adopted by the Romans during the occupation of Britain for the town now known as Ilkley, in West Yorkshire, which is where we are based.
This commission is of Autumn based on a Roman 4th century original in Tunisia. It has been created in handcut marble tesserae using traditional techniques.

The images show various stages of its development using lime putty, marble dust and rabbit skin glue.

The finished mosaic measures approximately 3ftx4ft (90cmx120cm).
As this is a wall piece the mosaic is designed to be ungrouted which allows the texture of the marble to be shown off to its best effect.
